David Greenberg violin Alison McGillivray cello David McGuinness harpsichord, director
In 18th century Scotland, folk and classical music were found and played together, and Concerto Caledonia takes this happy marriage as the starting point for its unique repertoire and approach, applying its energetic virtuosity to the traditional and art music of Scotland and elsewhere. The group mixes fiddle tunes, folk songs, reels and sonatas from Edinburgh’s Enlightenment with more contemporary repertoire by Fred Frith, Frank Zappa, and even John Cage. The group is equally comfortable performing in formal acoustic surroundings, or with a full sound and lighting rig in less ‘classical’ venues.
‘The listener is in for a very special treat. You just might freak out when you hear this.’ WholeNote, Toronto
