Christopher Hogwood director Paul Goodwin associate conductor Richard Egarr associate director
The Gonzaga Band was formed by cornettist Jamie Savan in 1997 in order to explore historical approaches to the performance of vocal and instrumental music of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its line-up is project led: the very best vocalists and period instrumentalists are ‘hand picked’ according to the special requirements of each programme. This means that the Gonzaga Band is able to offer a variety of innovative programmes, for combinations ranging from a quartet to a nonet, that will suit most festival budgets. Performing as ‘Il Vero Modo’, members of the Gonzaga Band appeared in the finals of the International Young Artists’ Competition in York in 2003 with a programme of songs and duets of Monteverdi and his contemporaries. Recent projects such as ‘Carmina Maximiliana’ and ‘Songs for the White King’ have developed exciting new approaches to improvisation and ornamentation in Renaissance music.
