Jeremy Brooker director/classical and baroque baryton Roland Hutchinson baryton/viola da gamba
With six or seven bowed strings and up to two dozen plucked strings, the baryton combines elements of the viol, the harp and the one-man band. Invented in 17th century England, it achieved musical greatness in the 1770s with more than 140 works written for it by Franz Joseph Haydn, creator of the classical symphony and string quartet. For more than ten years, Jeremy Brooker and the Hauschka Ensemble have been reviving the lost art of the travelling baryton virtuosi, presenting original 17th, 18th and 19th century music alongside modern works for this ‘Instrument of Princes’. They have given concerts, radio and TV appearances in America and across Europe from England to Hungary and the Slovak Republic, receiving universal critical acclaim, and recording two superbly engineered audiophile CDs.
