Jacob Heringman is one of the world’s foremost solo lute players. Born in America but based in England since 1987, he performs regularly throughout Europe, North and South America, and has also toured Japan. He has a well-established reputation for his passionate and committed performances and recordings of deserving but neglected Renaissance repertoire. His six solo recordings, of Holborne, Bakfark, Josquin, Jane Pickeringe’s Lute Book, The Art of the Lute Player and the recently released Siena Lute Book, have received unanimous critical praise. He appears on over 60 CDs as collaborator and ensemble player, with renowned artists such as Barbara Bonney and Michael Chance, and with leading medieval and renaissance ensembles including Fretwork, Musicians of the Globe, The King’s Singers, Virelai, and The Dufay Collective.
Sample Programme:
Jane Pickeringe’s Lute Book: Jane Pickeringe was an early 17th century Englist lutenist. Pickeringe’s delightful and hugely varied handwritten lute book is one of the most important sources of English lute music, and contains many pieces which are unique to this manuscript.
The Siena Lute Book is one of the richest and most important sources of Italian lute music of the sixteenth century. Leading composers of the period are represented, including Francesco da Milano, Fabritio Dentice, Giulio Severino, Oierino Fiorentino, as well as the mysterious FB and BM (the latter described by Galilei as a Florentine gentleman) and anon.
This programme of fantasias, ricercars, intabulations and parody fantasias based on the most famous vocal music of the time, together with selections from its lesser-known sister manuscript known as The Medici Lute Book, highlights the great stylistic variety and the superb musical quality of this repertoire.
