‘Mark Levy’s way with the viol is almost to make it speak’ International Record Review ‘Mark Levy draws an alluring sound from his 17th century instrument’ Gramophone
One of Britain’s leading ambassadors for the viol, Mark divides his time between solo and chamber recitals, directing his own ensemble Concordia, working with orchestras from the King’s Consort to the London Philharmonic, and recording early and new music for CD, radio, television and film, recently including contributions to the soundtracks The Shipping News, The Governess, Titus, and The Knight’s Tale. Mark has a special interest in English music and was artistic director of the Wigmore Hall’s William Lawes 400th anniversary concert series in 2002 and their Queen Elizabeth I 400th anniversary series in 2003, as well as appearing in a two-part BBC TV series on Lawes. His recital programmes often include the wonderful sonatas by Johann Sebastian and Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach, as well as the unforgettable music of Louis XIV’s favourite viol-players, Marais and Forqueray.
Sample Programme:
L’Echo du Danube: with Elizabeth Kenny guitar, theorbo. Fireworks from the French baroque: including Marin Marais’s flamboyant Folies d’Espagne and the midnight murmurings of his Voix Humaines, and discoveries from the music of the little-known Johann Schenck, a northern disciple of Marais who in turn had a great influence on Johann Sebastian Bach.

Mark loves speaking to audiences and is known for his entertaining introductions to concert programmes.
