John Potter tenor
The tenor John Potter has been a pioneering performer of early and new music, both as a soloist and as a former member of the Hilliard Ensemble. He is also one of the founder-members of three ensembles: Red Byrd, with Richard Wistreich (bass) in early polyphony and music of the ages of Monteverdi and Purcell; the Ciconia Ensemble, with Anna Maria Friman (soprano), Susanna Pell and Jacob Heringman (lutes and vielles) in music of the late 14th/early 15th centuries; and the Dowland Project, with John Surman (saxophone), Milos Valent (violin) and Stephen Stubbs (lute).
In the programme Being Dufay, John sings the music of Guillaume Dufay to provide the basis of an electro-acoustic composition by Ambrose Field, in an hour-long live programme. With Anna Maria Friman and the Gavin Bryars Ensemble, he returns to the 14th century song form of the lauda, as refashioned by Gavin Bryars.
