Critics and audiences alike have responded enthusiastically to Canzona’s full-blooded and emotional approach to the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The core of the ensemble consists of the classic trio sonata formation with two violins and a continuo section. However programmes involve from three players upwards, comprising some of this country’s leading players of period instruments. The players of Canzona have a particular passion for 17th century music, but whatever they are playing, from Monteverdi to Mozart, they make every effort to play on appropriate instruments for the period.
Canzona much enjoys working with singers, and many of their chamber concerts are with distinguished soloists such as James Bowman and Peter Harvey. Canzona regularly assumes orchestral proportions and has enjoyed some fine collaborations with the professional choir Polyphony as well as several good amateur choirs, in major works such as the Bach Passions, Handel’s Messiah and Monteverdi’s Vespers.
