Alan Tavener director + 8-12 singers
Cappella Nova is the only professional vocal ensemble specialising in the rich and unique treasury of Scottish early vocal music, devising cleverly constructed programmes that place it in historical context alongside mainstream European repertoire. Best known for championing the extraordinary, compex and creative polyphony of Robert Carver, the group also performs 13th century Scottish plainchant and polyphony and pre- and post-Reformation Scottish polyphony, from Latin motets to Psalms in the vernacular. The group has been able to develop a wide-ranging selection of programmes thanks to ongoing support from the Scottish Arts Council and full details are available on request. They have toured widely in Europe and the USA where the Boston Globe reported that ‘Cappella Nova is Scotland’s premier vocal ensemble. Its focus, commitment and virtuosic a cappella singing would make it premier just about anywhere.’ Cappella Nova has just recorded an entire CD of James MacMillan premieres for Linn Records.
