The Chalemie company dance, sing and act in performances of humorous 18th century pantomime, with music from the 18th century London theatre. Chalemie have performed throughout the UK (their ‘Hotchpotch Pantomime’ was chosen for an Early Music Network Tour) and in Europe. Performances are given in costume, with a simple set and lighting.

Programmes in repertory: The Awful Fate of Blowzabella or By Reason of the Entertainments the Play will be shorten’d: a reconstruction of a night at the theatre at a time when the singers, dancers and musicians providing the incidental entertainments were more popular than the play itself. Jack Spriggens and the Magic Bean: A family show based on what is possibly the earliest 18th century story version of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Harlequin Dr Faustus or the Adventures of a Sorcerer’s Apprentice at Southwark Fair: Chalemie’s new programme conjures up the bustling hubbub of Southward Fair in the 1730s as depicted in Hogarth’s painting of 1733. Chalemie make humorous connections between the bizarre hallucinations of a Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the mysterious machinations of Dr Faustus. Our performance includes music from LE Galliard’s Harlequin Dr Faustus pantomime score of 1723 and from the early 18th century English stage.

Education:

Chalemie gives schools workshop based on their shows, The Turbulent Tudors and the Victorians. Both workshops feature dancing, singing and a study of manners of the day, with a brief introduction and hands on instrument playing. The workshop is given in authentic costume of the day.
