The Burney Players formed in 1999 whilst studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and became the first period instrument ensemble to be awarded a fellowship there. Today, the group is known for having one of the most exciting voices in the world of early music. They have performed and broadcast across Europe, including the Innsbruck, Warsaw and Cheltenham festivals, to critical acclaim. They have also won several international prizes including the Zofia Rayzacher prize (Poland), the Deutsche Bank Pyramid Award (UK/Germany) as well as being prize-winners in the 2002 Van Wassenaer Competition (Netherlands).
The Burney Players take their name from Dr Charles Burney the 18th century musician, traveller and diarist, and enjoy illustrating their performances with readings and anecdotes.
In 2007, The Burney Players were appointed the first ensemble in residence at the Handel House Museum in London.
