Tamburrini explore the themes of love and passion in performances which blend sophisticated harmony with fiery Moorish rhythms, and subtle poetry with the earthy lyrics of rural Spain. This approach appeals to a wide variety of audiences, including lovers of jazz, folk and world music, and those unfamiliar with early music.
Performances have ranged from Bristol’s Ashton Court, the largest free festival in Europe, to an intimate recital combining Spanish music with the poetry of Lorca. The group has also had repeat invitations to perform at the Early Music Exhibition in London, and an enthusiastic reception at several Brighton Festival Open series.
Much of the group’s music is taken from the ‘Palace Songbook’, a collection linked to the court of Ferdinand and Isabella. However, much of their repertoire is unique, as musical director Steve Walter has developed extended pieces, building from a fragment of melody, or combining the popular tunes of the time.
