Since the early 1990s, the Welsh Baroque Orchestra has given professional concerts from St David’s in West Wales to Llandaff Cathedral to London, making its first recording in 2000. In June 2003 it was relaunched to critical acclaim and, thanks to grants from the Welsh Assembly Government and the Arts Council of Wales, pursues a more intensive musical life across Wales and beyond.
The Welsh Baroque Orchestra is flexible, its size varying to fit the variety of earlier repertoire which is its speciality. From a few strings and continuo (harpsichord or organ and/or theorbo), the group can grow to 30 players, with wind and brass as needed. Its musical aim is vivid and exciting music-making through historical awareness, using period instruments alongside the stylistic techniques that go with them.
The orchestra is also open to playing modern music with the sonorities of its period instruments. Last year Andrew Wilson-Dickson’s Greenhouse Effect was given its premiere as part of the Chepstow Arts Festival. In 2005, the orchestra was invited to perform in the Baroque Nights Festival in Varaždin, Croatia.

A Meteorological Concert: Vivaldi concertos evoking nature (Seasons, Tempesta di Mare, la Notte), the storm from Marais’ Alcyone and AWD’s new concerto grosso for period instruments: Greenhouse Effect.
Education:
WBO has a strong educational remit which it can meet through its members’ considerable store of teaching and playing experience. Its players have devised and taught a wide range of musical projects, working with children of all ages including A’ level performance and composition studies.
